Why do steel frame homes need a thermal break?

Steel frames have a higher thermal conductivity than timber, so a thermal break material (xps insulation board) needs to be applied to the exterior of the steel framing to prevent heat loss.

So a thermal break prevents the transmission of temperature through the steel frames and keeps the dew point outside the framing. It also prevents ‘ghosting’ on internal linings, which are visible marks on the walls where the framing is.  Watch this video to learn more: Thermal breaks for Steel Framing.

Here at Marco we supply a 10mm XPS insulation board which has an R value of 0.30
